Project Description:

ANUSHILP was a two-year-long collaborative project between the US-India Foundation and Anant National University, which aimed to empower artisans in Gujarat’s Narmada district. Through a blend of traditional craft knowledge, design thinking, and technology, the project upskilled artisans, supported sustainable livelihoods, and preserved cultural heritage. At its very core was the Artisans’ Residency Program, focused on developing high-quality, market-ready craft products and promoting economic, social, and cultural impact.

Artisans were empowered to plan and organize short-term training workshops. Each artisan led three workshops, reaching approximately 20 participants per session, thereby further spreading skills and fostering community development. An indirect impact of the Residency Program was the reporting of increased pride and respect for the artisans within their communities, which further inspired local interests in the artisans’ skills.
